IP reputation is a scoring system maintained by threat-intelligence databases (such as Maxmind, IPinfo, and Spamhaus) and commercial bot-management providers. It tracks whether an IP has been involved in spam, DDoS attacks, credential stuffing, scraping abuse, or malware distribution. When a request arrives at a protected site, its IP is checked against these databases in real time. A residential IP freshly assigned by an ISP starts with a clean reputation; a shared datacenter proxy that thousands of scrapers have used may be heavily flagged. IP reputation is the first and most influential filter in any bot-detection system.
