Full Definition

IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange version 2) is a VPN tunnelling protocol developed by Microsoft and Cisco that manages the key exchange and security association setup for IPSec tunnels. Its standout feature is MOBIKE (Mobility and Multihoming), which allows active VPN sessions to survive network interface changes — such as moving from Wi-Fi to a mobile data connection — without dropping or re-establishing the VPN. This makes IKEv2/IPSec the preferred VPN protocol for mobile devices. It is fast, stable, and natively supported on iOS and macOS. However, it is easier to detect and block than protocols that disguise themselves as regular HTTPS traffic.
